In 2015, my husband was diagnosed with Stage III colorectal cancer, found at a routine screening at age 51. He was previously super healthy and fit, not at all the type of person you'd think would get sick. 2015 and 2016 were the worst years of our lives. His treatment was horrific. In October 2015, when we got the diagnosis, we weren't sure if he'd live to see our daughter get married (he did, May 2017) or be around to meet his first grandchild (she was born March 2021). Well, he just reached the milestone of 5 years cancer free (yeah, baby, yeah!!!), and he's doing great! We fully expect him to be around to meet his GREAT grandchildren someday.
I'm raising money in my husband's honor. Dan is my hero, the strongest and greatest man I know. Through this fundraiser, I want people to realize that colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death among men and women combined in the United States. It's also the only cancer that's completely preventable and curable if caught early via screening. It sounds cliché, but if just one person reading this schedules his or her colonoscopy because of what I just said, then I've done my job well.
